In the 2007-08 fiscal year, Harbor House had just over 350 volunteers and accumulated 9525 volunteer hours of service.  This incredible amount of time and energy devoted to Harbor House makes all of the difference in the lives of those we serve. Volunteers are a crucial part of the Harbor House community and it is impossible to express their importance to the agency. The amount of time you choose to volunteer is completely up to you and any time you give will be a greatly appreciated.  We consider our volunteers as part of our family and welcome them with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

We currently have several volunteer opportunities available. Whether you prefer to work with our participants, help with special events, work in the mail & fulfillment department, or assist with administrative needs we know we have the right fit for you.

Hours of operation at Harbor House are Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-4:00pm.  Special Events will have volunteer opportunities available throughout the year, daytime hours, nights and weekends.

Programs
Harbor House needs volunteers to come in and put your talents to work.  We need people to come in and teach our participants a variety of skills.

We have a need for fitness coaches, nutrition guidance, money skills, safety awareness, assisting with arts & crafts, teaching how to sew or knit, teaching cooking skills, teaching computer skills, etc.  Many of these areas offer the ideal opportunity for someone to share and educate our participants about topics in which they receive training. After all, there is nothing like real world experience to prepare you to teach others.

Additional areas of training are always needed, please contact us if you think you have expertise in an area that might benefit the individuals we serve.

Mail Department
Harbor House has a wonderful mail department that brings in customers from all over the city and fulfills their mailing and fulfillment needs.  Our participants actually work on the mail jobs and earn a monthly paycheck.  At times, the work load is so demanding and in order to fulfill the customer’s needs and deadlines, we bring in volunteers to help finish the jobs.  Examples of volunteer jobs are stuffing envelopes, tabbing, folding, inserting letters, and other work as needed on mail jobs.

Administrative/Clerical
Harbor House has administrative and clerical needs that we utilize volunteers to help out from time to time.  Volunteers may be asked to help at the front desk with sign in/out and answering the phone, data entry, filing, and other clerical work as needed.

Special Events
Harbor House needs volunteers to help with special events that we participate in throughout the year.  Our signature event, The Ken-Ducky Derby requires a significant number volunteers for things such as event set up and breakdown, staffing info and adoption booths, data entry, preparation of promotional materials and more.

The need is always growing so we hope you can look at the different opportunities and find something that suites you. To become a volunteer for Harbor House of Louisville or request more information, please contact Dee Pilkerton at 719-0072 ext. 29 or email at dpilkerton@hhlou.org
