Louisville, Kentucky – In these tough economic times, it can be difficult to find secure employment for even the most qualified job applicants. Finding a job for an adult with a moderate to severe disability can be near impossible. Yet, that is exactly what Bill Carrico, Supported Employment Specialist at Harbor House of Louisville, sought out to do every day from the day he was hired until his untimely passing on June 7th, 2008. Bill worked tirelessly to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to lead a fulfilled life by partnering Harbor House participants with willing employers in the Louisville community. Harbor House of Louisville, a local non-profit organization, was shocked by the news of Bill’s passing and both staff and participants struggled to figure out how to cope with the shock of losing such an effectual friend, mentor and coworker.
In April 2009, one Harbor House staff member created a way for the staff and participants of Harbor House to celebrate Bill’s memory in a way that would be both meaningful and upbeat. Sarah Beck, Program Supervisor and Bill’s close friend, shared her idea with the staff, and The Bill Carrico Memorial Baseball Game was brought into existence. Her idea was simple; staff and participants could combine Bill’s deep affection for baseball and his love of Harbor House and turn it into an activity that both celebrated his memory and engaged the participants. The event was a success, and a tradition was born.
The 2nd Annual Bill Carrico Memorial Baseball Game will take place on Friday, July 9th. The game is from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at the baseball field directly adjacent to Harbor House property. Harbor House welcomes everyone to attend to cheer on the participants. In the spirit of Bill Carrico, community involvement is the key to inspiring hope and to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to lead fulfilled and productive lives.
